A Sleep Number bed is essentially an air bed so it comes down to comparing an airbed to a memory foam mattress.
Sleep Number pros:
* adjustable firmness
* somewhat good support (too much air makes it hard, too little makes it soft. The search for the right firmness can be a bit frustrating)
Sleep Number cons:
*difficult to cuddle or just sleep in the middle when the two sides of the bed are of different firmness
Tempurpedic pros:
* temperature responsiveness (contours your body and gives a sense of weightlessness)
* good support, relieves pressure and ensures spine alignment
Tempurpedic cons:
* can get hard in colder environments and too soft in warmer environments
You won't like this but only personal comfort tells you which is the right bed for you. Try a home trial or try the beds in store.

I have a 2" memory foam mattress topper because I think is a much better way to go. Everyone tells me that my bet is SUPER soft and wishes it was theirs! I've tried laying on tempur-pedic mattress bed and i hated it. It felt like i was falling and falling! It never stopped. I feared I'd have nightmares about falling off a building or something cuz i kept sinking sinking in. The memory foam mattress topper was about $100 bucks. and i'm very happy with it! I've also bought them for friends on ebay for less then that. Yes the two are practically the same except the toppers are not as thick. However, there are a lot of different thicknesses and densities for memory foam mattress toppers.
