I both work well and not work well under pressure simultaneously. I think John Updike described it well, to paraphrase ; procrastination is the belief that the closer one gets to the deadline, the more time seems to dilate, and the more you believe your self capable of accomplishing. By the time that last day arrives time will seem infinite and you'll think you are Superman. But it never is and you never are. Despite putting in a a greatest effort due to self pressurization you'll probably end up doing substandard work or getting a B- when you could have gotten an A.

Pressure from without is a little different than pressure created from within. it can lead to better work due greater concentration of effort or just as easily overwhelm and and cause discombobulation, so it's a fine line

I work very well under pressure. Sometimes it can be a bad thing, because I will put something off until I am now under pressure to get it done :)

But especially when something is complicated, urgent, and stressful, with lots of visibility and a lot at stake, I do very well. I think some of this is part of who you are inside, and some of it is learned along the way. I am calm and steady, not afraid to ask for help or advice, and just don't have that panic gene.

I worked for most of my career in high-pressure management positions as chief problem solver, and my reputation is that I stay calm and approach the problem in a systematic way.

For folks who don't do well under pressure, I would say to learn and practice a step-by-step process to thinking through a problem. It usually helps to write down the steps and then the things you know and the things you don't know. There are also some easy-to-use approaches to making decisions, I think you can find them on the internet. The more organized thinking and "process" you bring to a tough situation, the easier it will be. It's also helpful to learn techniques to control stress. I am big on massage :)

Sometimes I do and sometimes I just can't. I am not consistent. As I am getting older, I'm losing the ability to work well under pressure. I just want to have a stress-free and pressure free life now.

I've seen lots of pressures and stresses in the past and I hope I dont have to deal with any pressure again. Most likely I can no longer work well under pressure.

It has been my experience that I do well under pressure. Some of that is of my own making because I procrastinate my assignments until the moment when I can delay no longer. My wife blames it on being ADHD but if so, it is a functional sort of the disorder manifested simply in that I focus better when I am under pressure to do so.

I have noticed this pattern in my behavior since childhood and I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to break that habit. I have taken time management courses, including the Covey Seven Steps for Highly Effective People.

Do I stress out a little bit? Sure I do but I am able to cope with it and generally function well when placed in that situation. I don't recommend it others as a way to conduct their lives, feeling that it is better to plan out your tasks so that they are done by and by and not all at the last moment.

I continue to labor to do a better job with my time management, in order to reduce stress. In the meantime, I still do good work when I am under pressure to get it done.

To a certain extent, yes. I can work well under just the right amount of pressure, so I can think about what I'm supposed to do. For example, when I'm writing an essay or doing a PowerPoint project, I have enough time to get my facts in. However, too much pressure will cause me to rush through everything. An example of this would be having a big project that I've been working on all day, but I'm still not done with it yet even though I'm supposed to be, causing me to panic and not be able to think well.

Pressure is something one has to find within their own inner limits. As a leader, I am expected to thrive under pressure; otherwise, how much of a leader could I be? It all begins and ends with keeping things in their proper perspective - every 'crisis' cannot be the be all, end all. If you let pressure consume you, you are lost from the beginning; if you let the pressure serve to motivate and accept the challenge, you will likely realize that issues can be worked out and your team will respect you for your insight and calmness during the turbulent storms caused by pressure.

NO. Don't even talk about working under pressure. I like to be left alone. I can transform the world if I'm alone, but since there are others around, I feel totally shy and uncomfortable. It certainly has more than something to do with my mild asperger's syndrome.

I totally feel awkward and exposed when in a public setting. Though I'm the coolest guy when I'm alone. (sad no one knows that *weep*)

Whenever someone is looking at me while doing work, my brain just kinda shuts off and leaves me alone to deal with the evil thing I was working on.

It depends on what i'm doing. For example, if i'm playing a video game under pressure, then I will change the way I play the game in an attempt to do better. Instead, I do worse.

If i'm running in a Cross Country race under pressure, I will do better because with all the people watching me, It would be embarassing to do failed, or did bad.

It absolutely depends WHAT the pressure is. I worked many years under it for a variety of companies from time to time. In some cases? It paid off and WAS a team effort. In other cases? Boss reaped all the reward - didn't give credit to staff and REAL TEAM. In those cases? So sorry I busted my as* and usually, it was so character revealing that I'd usually leave a job for a transfer or another company (I never made it a habit of working for men and women with NO INTEGRITY for very long in my career - probably the best mantra to self I ever committed to as it saved my sanity!) Personally? I do just fine, as long as I see "the light at the end of the tunnel" !!! We all know? CONSTANT pressure of either kind will most definitely, shorten your life. Little doubt there. Have seen this over and over again...Just the way we humans are built - we can take? Just so much.

Normal Human Beings get pressurized when there is a fear of "Not Reaching the Target". Many times we achieve our visions only by working under pressure. If there is no fear and pressure, we become lazy and unaccountable. This pressure should be not just for a materialistic cause. If just money becomes the aim, then we will have a situation where a "well educated" medical doctor stealing the kidney of an innocent patient. A well educated lawyer will use all his talents to escape from the law. Well educated persons need a glass of alcohol to sleep for few hours in peace bcos they are pressurised for wrong tasks and targets. Most of the time they are forced to do against their own conscience. Today we have Nuclear Weapons, Climatic disasters, Female Oppression, Homo Sex etc because these harmful things are the results of wrong pressures forced on eminent persons for wrong things.

I believe I work better with a deadline. I'm not sure that's necessarily pressure. I can really move and become amazingly efficient under real pressure.

With no pressure or deadlines, I tend to procrastinate terribly putting things off until I DO have a deadline and then I manage to finish the project!!

I don't work well under pressure for a variety of reasons. First of all due to my autism I work at a slower pace, second of all if I have pressure I get stressed and I don't work effectively when I get stressed. Also if I know that if I don't do well there will be consequences it also reduces my work productivity. Also if I work at my own pace I work more effectively because if I work under pressure this stress might cause me to make mistakes.

Yes! Definitely. If I'm not under pressure then my mind is always wandering to other things that I feel are more important at the moment, but once I'm under pressure the "freaking out" moment forces me to focus on what I am doing and I get it done a lot faster. A good example can be notes assigned into sections for each night, where you feel the pressure that you must get it done right away, versus notes assigned all at once and is due the next week, where you feel no pressure at all and do not get it done as fast.

I feel that I work well or perhaps even better under pressure. Although I enjoy a calm and quiet life I have always had a sharp mind regarding making quick and correct decisions. During my life including the Armed Forces, Construction Field, and dangerous neighborhoods I seem to do well and am no worse for the wear. I have saved my own life and lives of others, prevented serious injuries, and met daunting deadlines. Good question Yahoo

All depends what kind of pressure. If there is a logical explanation to it, it can push you to better performance, but this only makes sense when it is also rewarded. Now, pressure in form of mobbing will always have 2 issues. Or you give importance to it, or you don't. If you do, you will endure stress, since stress is something you create inside yourself if things or people around you do not behave the way you want them to do. If you don't, you face 2 situations again, or the one who puts pressure on you will stop it, or you will lose your job.

I can work under pressure without stress, all you need to do is target one single point and ignore all others, never start multitasking.

So, what is pressure, do you work too slow, do you give importance to too many people at same time, or events. Say yes and amen, that's all you can do. I have worked as a responsible agent in a company that occupies 40000 people, I had responsibility to give service to some 10000 of them, and here, the simple way to do it was evaluating what was important and thus who to serve first, and for the rest, since anyone gives importance to himself only, just let them scream. After awhile, they know you and they know how you do things, they will accommodate their behavior to yours, and you will never become a slave of them. The trick is to educate the people the way you would like them to be without offending them.

I seldom endure stress, I do, sometimes, mainly when I work for myself and things turn not the way I want, but generally, a short break and a few minutes of relaxation resolve the problem.

So, in some way the question of the day was too much superficial.

The latest thing who stressed me and still does, is your stupid purple pest, that sh.tty platform you put on answers as a boring change recently. Fortunately I find a trick to turn around it, and many of us do. If this trick happened to be non efficient, I will just leave answers. The only positive thing on the platform was to remove that "answer question" button. If now, in the answer pane, we could see the amount of characters remaining, it would prevent us to write too much and then have to shorten it afterwards, a real loss of time. This purple pest does not puts pressure on us, we just quit answers and seek our happiness elsewhere. So, turn green again please.

Working under pressure is standard for my job - an IT field technician for a Fortune 100 company. The trick is to focus on what you are doing and what the next step is, while occasionally checking where it is all going. Four years ago I was on a remote mountaintop trying to revive a DACS (think of an electronic switchboard for 3000 circuits) that had been damaged by lightning. For hours it would not even settle down because the damage was so extensive, very much like a disaster site where the injured are screaming for help. One foot in front of the other.

It depends on if the work I am doing is fairly interesting. If it isn't then I will be feeling fairly depressed. Oh and; I wouldn't consider myself an un-unique person, I live in a very cold place where I spend most of my life with the same friends and family and I don't really meet new people. I also eat the same food all the time, although it has a lot of Omega 3, but it is still getting a bit dull. My life is quite black a white and I feel like I am sliding around on my belly all of the time and I almost lost my egg, seriously! As you can see I am in quite a bit of pressure but I still manage to deliver some decent work, even with all of the predators around!

No, I don't work well under pressure. But, however, I try to ignore a person that is putting pressure on me, and I work like there is no pressure. That's what I always try to do. I always try to take things easy. Because there is nothing better than taking things easy.

Have a great day and I hope my answer helped.

I'm OK under pressure--it's after the pressure is gone that I curl up in a fetal position. I have epilepsy and I'm a lawyer, and I did fine taking the bar exam, which lasted for two days. But on the third day, after it was all over, I had a seizure from the stress.

I do not work well under any kind of pressure. I use the analogy 'my mind is like a one track mind and I can get derailed so easily'. So many people I tell this analogy to do not comprehend what I am talking about. They think I am capable of handing pressure just fine, like them. I carefully remind them I'm not them, I'm me. Too many people tell others what to do with their lives, but don't have the guts or brains to live their own with any measure of satisfaction.

Contrary to the oft repeated falsehood, humans are NOT social creatures. We are individuals and I, for one, am glad to be an individual. To all those who do work well under pressure, I'll be sure to stay out of your way when you eventually crash horribly.

Yes I do ,but only in certain circumstances ;such as if i am working in some other persons house or property then i really get stuck in ,weather it be felling trees ,laying new patios or rotating and leveling for new lawns or concreting or painting PS I do not like painting but i will get stuck in and do a good job I never get any complaints only praise ans 99,percent of the time when the work is completed they will give me a bottle of Brandy or Whisky But on the other hand when it comes to my own house it is the other way round as i can not seem to get motivated the drums of paint can be on the floor in the kitchen for weeks and when i look at them I say to my self i will start tomorrow ,so eventually my wife opens the paint and starts it herself cause she knows this drives me nuts as she is great at making a balls of it not on purpose then i feel guilty and we have a bit of an argument so i change my clothes grab the paintbrush and ask her to stay out of my way politely as possibly can under the circumstances which she politely does HaHa you know what i mean cause iff you dont then you are a LIAR so eventually the job gets done and she then tells me that she should have got a different color and i tell her she should have got a different Husband in the usual Polite way

I can perform so well under extreme pressure, it amazes me at times but how I act with accurate presence of mind i have no idea. I have often observed in times of panic, I behave almost like a robot without any emotions. In times of trouble i can think clearly and remain focused on the subject matter. I make the correct decision specially when someone else is involved and i have to be in charge, at such moments i never care about what people have to say about what i am doing, but i know that whatever i am doing is absolutely correct, in the due coarse i ask for help from other people but in case if they refuse it never discouraged me and i shift my concentration somewhere else to get better results I can never recall any situation when i was under immense pressure, but did not perform my best and finally came out with flying colors----Its an inborn quality perhaps.

Most people don't work AT ALL without some sort of pressure. NO ONE works well under too much pressure. The basic premise of the question is flawed to the extent that nearly everyone responding is answering a different question.
2014-02-07 20:37:58 UTC
I fI answer this question, it would just be an answer amongst so many others. What can I do to make mine stand out? Obviously not Caps Lock...

Yes, I do work well under pressure, it triggers my instincts for me to work harder and to just barrel through this pressure-y thing. If I'm not under pressure, I laze around...well, not actually watching TV or playing video games, they don't interest me, but I watch anime! A shout to society reading this- do YOU watch anime? It tends to help me ease pressure a bit as well...

So does going to anime conventions help me ease pressure, I mean, come one! Even just reading about them eases my nerves! (I never been to one before.)

In general, I believe I do my best work when I'm not "being pressured" because I tend to be self-motivated. I'm most sensitive to time pressure and risk. If I have a solid plan of action, and enough resources to complete it, I'm fine. It's when projects have been under-budgeted (time and money), requirements are in flux (moving target), deadlines are rapidly approaching, or you are forced to compromise quality because of budget or schedule, that's when the stress has a negative impact on my performance. Stress invokes the fight or flight response. Fighting can be beneficial to a point, especially if you're in a battle. But I've always found better solutions come from cooler heads.

I work well under some pressure. If there is too much then I tend to start getting overwhelmed and I "check out" a bit or maybe will forget to do something because I am so focused on another task that is at hand. I can work well when it's moderate pressure because the pressure will motivate me to get things done, and I will work faster. Also, the work environment depends on what kind of pressure, if it's an easy job that doesn't require too much hard thinking, than it will get done faster, but if I need to think clearly then I will need more time to do so.

Physical or mental pressure.

They are so different to me, I thrive on graft and work and actually enjoy the satisfaction of a good job well done.

Time scale pressure is acceptable as well, we all have dead-lines be it digging a ditch or brain surgery. What I won't tolerate however is the pressure applied by some little office working autocrat looking to excise his futility by attempting to bully those in an inferior position.

I can if I HAVE to, but I prefer NOT to. I used to work for a national pizza chain as a cook. In our "store," a good day was a $700/hr sales. Once, I handled an $800/hr SOLO with NO mistakes! My area manager once told her manager that I was a "$30,000/yr cook." In that business, that's a HIGH compliment!

But if I have my druthers, I can do "boring" VERY well!

I'm a career sailor/solider 10yrs Navy and 17 US Army Reserves retired Sgt. as for pressure/stress I'm very calm and focused on the problem. I'm also a Merchant Marine Engineer of 7 yrs and have to swallow the fear and shakiness in a high level emergency like a fire or flooding or equipment failure that has happen to me at the most distressing time crossing the Columbia Bar. I served one in-country tour of Vietnam and was under fire a couple times that is when I was told that I was very calm and cool when the shrapnel flew. While serving in the reserves I was working civil service for the Dept. Of Defense at Naval Shipyards and had to respond to an injury emergency to one of my machinist after which my lead mechanic said had it been any other Supervisor the results would not have been as successful due to my training and calm demeanor. Not bragging mind you just stating the facts.

Yes, and it is assuring that it is often pressured for the sake of the investment and securing the return it brings. But since work puts play into practice, or there is no way to conceive of beginning accomplishing any work, the play part flounders under scrutiny and flipping the birdie to a boss that abuses this is indeed hard work without pressure.

I think I do well under pressure because,

I have compassion for others and myself,

I see people as all having potential,

and a chance to do better, I think

compassion is patient, and is understanding during times of being pressured.

When there's no compassion you could fold and stress out,

because compassion at first, is just a word

although, and when it is learned,

it will become easy to apply each and every day.

It depends on the pressure. If its something that takes full effort..well I don't think anyone who rushes or is under pressure can actually do something to their full potential. I think I do well under pressure when its small things like lying or rushing out the door I guess lol.

I cannot work under deep pressure. It's so pathetic that employers expect us to work like donkeys; excuse me, we are human beings too, just like you, made of flesh and blood with emotions! We need time to spend with our family issues, deal with various matters with outside world. I'm a creative writer and I need some inspiration, and it does not come with experience! I do my work with passion and interest but I don't want to work 24/7. I have my life too.. Just like you! You can easily find a replacement for me if I die over working but my people will not be able to replace me so I guess it will be humane to keep this in your overly swollen mind and get things done from us. WE ARE NOT SLAVES!

Best answer is yes to work under pressure because it makes me :

1-Solidify my elastic skills .

2-Mark my unmarked field experiences .

3-Extend my vision to other fields to get in .

4-Classify my priorities .

5-Manage my times .

6-Identify time value .

7-Change me from an employees to a manager .

8-Variate my interests .

9-Gain more better than relaxed work .

Although I can typically react well under pressure and make good decisions on the fly, if I have to work with it for an extended period of time I will typically start producing lower quality work or forget aspects of it.

I actually work better under pressure. I tend to procrastinate if I have alot of time to do a project....and then I start multi-tasking and working on alot of different projects at once.............but as deadlines loom.........I am better at buckling down, and focusing, and getting the job DONE , when I have a set deadline. Truth be told, I actually enjoy the challenge of it better.

This depends: if it's a high-pressure situation with decent co-workers, then bring it on.

High-pressuer with frustrating, aggrivated and short-tempered folks, not so much. It really depends on the environmental factors to me.

Depends, if i have one thing to worry about i can work with it and get it completated and out of my way. But if its many problems or many things i have to deal with then i might not be able to function. I've already had two aniexty attacks because of to much pressure and stress.

I do have the ability to work under pressure. But comparing my under pressure work to no pressure, I do the no pressure work better. But being under pressure requires you not to just work, but create and use your brain. So, I prefer working under pressure.

I hate it when people watch me work. When they bug you for a finish time every 5 min it' just infuriates me and I start to make mistakes. (I used to design, build and service machinery). Other than that I don't feel pressure. Every job takes as long as it takes, ok?

I used to when I was young, but now I get tired and flustered. However, if the stress I'm working under is a code blue, I become extraordinarily sharply focused. I think it's the years of training. After it's over, I'm likely to go collapse somewhere for a while.

There should be no place for pressure in work, work should be done with joy and interest , else work won't come well , pressure and haste spoils the work and one can't show excellence in that . so always work with joy and interest ., work done with interest comes well than work done under pressure . if you need to show excellence in work then do work with joy and passion , else don't do that .. . .

I work better slowly, i am able to construct and plan what i'm going to do easier, if i'm rushed it looses how good it could have been. I'd rather be a slow perfectionist. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
