How do you swallow a pill?

Question

I know that this might seem like a silly question but I have trouble swallowing pills.
It has nothing to do with a medical problem or anything,.. its just that I don't know how to do it, and I freak myself out.

Even if the pill is very small, i still can't do it.

How do I swallow pills. What is everyone doing that I'm doing wrong?

Like i put it in my mouth and I'm about to swallow but somehow I stop myself, like right before swallowing. Like my tongue stops me.

How do people swallow pills with water?

I can't even swallow pills with apple sauce or chocolate syrup or anything else.

I was perscribed a medicine that you cannot crush or chew. Please tell me how to swallow it with water or whatever.

I used to freak out about swallowing pills, especially the big ones. The biggest issue is just doing it. Don't let the pill sit in your mouth and start to dissolve and get you nervous. Most of these pills are the size of like a corn kernel or something. And even the bigger ones are made to be swallowed. What you have to do it put the pill on the back of your tongue. And right away, without any break between to scare/prepare yourself, take a long chug of water swallowing multiple swallows of water. Even if you get scared because you feel that it didn't go down on the first swallow, it’s okay, just keep swallowing more and more water until it goes down. If you do it fast and don't think about it you should get the hang of it soon.

It's something that comes with practice and is hard to describe, but I'll give it a shot:



Put the pill in your mouth about midway towards the back. Then take a large sip of water and let the pill wash down your throat with the water.



It helps to practice with smaller pills before trying larger ones. Maybe you could practice with Nerds candy. :-)



If it's sticking to your mouth, you might try coating it with butter or margarine to help it slide more smoothly.



Some people just can't seem to swallow pills at all. If you don't have any luck, call your doctor or pharmacist and ask if the medication can be made into a liquid or other form. This is an option with some medicines.

I am just like you. I had to take powdered aspirin (bufferin it was called) because I couldn't swallow pills.



Here's how to do it - Put the pill about halfway on your tongue without gagging. Not too far back. Get a glass of water and drink a LOT of water with the pill on your tongue. If there is enough water (without gagging on the water), it should flush the pill down. When you take the drink of water, just think about taking a normal drink of water and don't think about swallowing a pill. LOTS OF WATER is the key here.

I have the same problem do not feel bad.

put the pill in your mouth and then get a big gulp of water then toss your head back fast the pill will go down with the water practice with just water a few times

First of all, calm down. Take a deep breath. If you're stressed, your throat constricts and swallowing a pill will be harder. Place the pill on the back of your tongue, and quickly take a gulp of water and swallow.

I think if you can swallow a mouthful of food then you can surely swallow a small pill. Just try swallowing something like a kernel of corn or, cut a small pill sized piece of fruit or something, and try to swallow it, surely you can swallow more than one kernel of corn at a time right? It's really not that hard to do.

Well you are very different than my friend, she swallows any size pill without any water! O_O



Basically, I drink SOME water, put it in my mouth and hold it.



And then i slip the pill into my mouth and just swallow normally.

stick it on your tongue and keep your mouth shut and tilt your head back slightly. At a given point the saliva building up in your mouth will force you to swallow.

If that doesn't work i heard that taking a shot of pure lemon juice with the pill works.

I was the same when I was a few years younger (and my little brother is having the same problem).

But what I did was swallowed jelly beans using water. Like i did it one by one to practice. Odd huh?

Well you get used to the feeling and then when the pill comes around it should be much easier.

You may have already tried this, but in case you haven't, I have found it's easier if you fill your mouth with the liquid first, and then pop the pill in and swallow. Often times you won't even feel the pill in your mouth if you do this fast enough, because there's already so much liquid in it.

I JUST learned this year how to do it haha!



First, fill your mouth with water and swallow.

Do this again, but before you swallow squeeze the pill into your mouth, pretend nothing is in there and just swallow.



Make sure your mouth is like FULL though.

Take a swig of some kind of liquid, NON alcoholic, and tilt your head back, don't swallow yet. Open your mouth, plop the pill in and swallow, you won't even notice it.

I used to have the same problem when i was younger...

I just put the pill on the very back of my tongue, and take a drink. it goes down easy. Your problem is that you freak out and don't let it down. just keep trying, once you get it, it'll be easier from then on, trust me, i was the same way!

put water in your mouth first like completely, like a blow fish then press the pill in through your lips. then close your eyes and swallow everything in your mouth without thinking about it.

its easy, take three deep breaths, on the last breath ounce you exhale, with the pill on your tongue or in your mouth wash it down with some water quickly. that works for me. just breath and just pretend the pill isn't there and your drinking a nice pina colada or some other tasty drink.

Yes, I used to do that when I couldn't swallow pills. Just make sure you put a little bit of water in the glass, (or something flavored to take away the yucky taste) then put the stuff in, and drink all of the water; if there is still gunk on the bottom put more water in and chug. lol.

I have the exact same problem! i like subconsciously stop the pill from going down my throat. i usually just put the pill in yogurt or something like that. even macaroni. but if you cant do that then idk. i guess you just have to not think about it.
