lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest significant amounts of lactose, the major sugar found in milk. Lactose intolerance is caused by a shortage of the enzyme lactase, which is produced by the cells that line the small intestine. Lactase breaks down milk sugar into two simpler forms of sugar called glucose and galactose, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. Not all people deficient in lactase have the symptoms commonly associated with lactose intolerance, but those who do are said to have lactose intolerance.

My digestive system was lactose intolerant as a child -- could not digest the enzymes in cows milk.

It is not an unusual situation, however. How much sense is it for a human to drink the milk of a cow?

Human female breast milk is the best milk for a growing infant. Past the infant stage however, there is little need to keep up the milk habit into childhood.

The American Dairy Association has been pushing the "children need milk" agenda for years now and for a reason.

Some people will outgrow the lactose intolerance; others, like me, have to have some prescription medication (I was given Prednisone, this was back in the 1970's) to heal the digestive system. Change in diet usually takes place. I wasn't diagnosed with a lactose intolerant system until I was 9 years old as it was rare back then in the 1970's. Symptoms included heavy internal bleeding, severe cramps, stomach aches. I was a mess. Monthly trips to hospitals out of the city as far as 30 miles away.

All I can say is if parents find their child has the symptoms I had, have it diagnosed as early as possible, then make the change in diet.

Some people do not have or lose a special kind of cell in their digestive system that produces an enzyme needed for digesting the kind of sugar found in milk. We all naturally lose these cells as we age.

People sometimes confuse lactose intolerance with cow’s milk intolerance because the symptoms are often the same. However, lactose intolerance and cow’s milk intolerance are not related. Being intolerant to cow’s milk is an allergic reaction triggered by the immune system. Lactose intolerance is a problem caused by the digestive system."

People who don't have a milk allergy may think it's easy to avoid eating foods that are made with milk or milk products. You just say "no" to ice cream and pizza, right? (Yeah, like that’s easy.)

But so many foods are made with milk and milk products these days that people with milk allergies have to pay attention to what's in just about everything they eat. And a milk allergy is not the same as lactose intolerance — some people with food allergies can become suddenly and severely ill if they eat or even come in contact with the food they’re allergic to.

Some foods that contain milk are obvious, like pizza. But others, like baked goods, may not be so obvious. Plus, teens need calcium and vitamin D, which milk has lots of, because their bones are still growing.

Milk and other dairy products contain a sugar or carbohydrate called lactose. Normally, the body breaks down lactose into its simpler components with the help of the enzyme lactase. Most mammals stop producing lactase when they are weaned; humans, however, continue to produce it throughout life. Without enough lactase, a person can have digestive problems like abdominal pain and diarrhoea. This is known as lactose intolerance or lactase deficiency.

It is rare for Caucasians to develop lactose intolerance. However, it is quite common among people from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and some Mediterranean countries, as well as among Australian Aborigines. Up to five per cent of Caucasians and up to 75 per cent of non-Caucasians living in Australia are lactose intolerant.

Many Australian babies are unnecessarily weaned because their irritability is wrongly assumed to be lactose intolerance. In reality, the severe form of this condition – known as primary lactose intolerance (where the infant does not produce lactase from birth) – is rare. Secondary lactose intolerance (which develops after weaning) is more common. This can occur temporarily after a bout of gastroenteritis, for example, but often improves after several weeks as the lining of the gut heals.

Some people can't drink milk because they are lactose intolerant, that means they cannot digest the lactose that is found in all dairy products, such as milk, cheese, whipped cream, sour cream, etc. This causes them to have upset stomach, or even diarrhea.

Some people lack the enzyme that assists in breaking down milk products. It is known as lactose intolerance. They make tablets that you can take to provide those enzymes, and you will be able to digest milk alot easier.

Hope this helps you.

Some people can't drink milk because they are lactose intolerant. That means that their body does not digest the lactose in milk.
