I have ~40 dB hearing loss on both ears, and sometimes have problems conversating, especially one-by-one in quiet enviroments - like job interview.
I've decided to buy economy-class hearing aid, which is about $300-500, just for such cases - like job interviews. :) But doctor in the hearing center said that such device will not be suitable for young person like me, and it's much better to purchase two (for each ear) more expensive devices, that is more than $2000 - too much for me with below 1000 salary. And they said that background noise reduction and sensogram-adjustment are very important and not available in cheaper-class devices.
Is that really so? Or it's just a company interest to sell more expensive thing?

Hearing aids is one thing you get what you pay for. The economy class aids you are talking about will help you especially in quiet situations. Most people have the opposite problem and have a LOT of trouble hearing anytime there is background noise. A younger person is typically more active than an 80 year old and needs to hear in restaurants, bars, while playing golf, at church, meetings, work, home, bowling, playing sports, etc. The more advanced hearing aids can help more in more difficult listening situations. That said any hearing aid is better than no hearing aid. A more expensive aid is going to help in more listening situations. You are the one that has to decide how much money you can spend. Do you want to spend your tax refund on hearing aids? Maybe that will help with getting a better one. Many people with hearing loss really isolate themselves socially. Hearing aids can really help. Whatever way you go you do need two hearing aids though. It would be better to have two of the economy aids than one of the more expensive aids.

Your first experiences are essential for the successful adjustment of your hearing aid. We have put together a few tips and tricks for you, so that you will be able to fully enjoy your hearing aid. Make use of all the possibilities your modern hearing solution has to offer! A hearing aid is an electroacoustic device which is designed to amplify sound for the wearer, usually with the aim of making speech more intelligible, and to correct impaired hearing as measured by audiometry. In the United States, Hearing aids are considered medical devices and are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration . Ordinary small audio amplifiers or other plain sound reinforcing systems cannot be sold as "hearing aids". In addition, please follow the instructions you received with your hearing aid.
